I’ve recently heard about something called hygge (pronounced hoo-guh), which is a Danish concept which consists of taking a step away from daily rush to just enjoy the moment. I assume we’ve all seen posters or cushions where ”Enjoy the moment” or ”Take a break” is written on them. Even though they became the epitome of the English teacher aesthetic, they’re 100% right. My schedule has been nothing but full for months on end because of exams, clubs, events, amongst other things, that the only time where I actually feel peace and alone is during the night. Obviously, that messed up my sleep schedule and made the following day a bit harsher than what it was supposed to be (considering I wake up at 5:40). But I love spending time alone and being a night owl, it’s unlike being alone anywhere else. Let’s be honest, everything’s better at night; eating, working, playing, listening to music. Anyway, I’m not encouraging you guys to mess up your sleep schedule, I just want to share a cool concept I learned.

Hygge is the concept of taking a break from all the rush to spend time with people you care about, family and close friends to enjoy life’s quieter pleasures. It could be walking around school very early in the morning with a friend, talking with a parent during a car ride or a self care soirée with friends. It’s not necessarily anything to change or add if those are common scenarios you find yourself in on the regular. Hygge is quite difficult to achieve if you’re not surrounded by old friends or a familiar environment. If you need to make your own corner at home (it could be your own bed or desk if space is limited), use Pinterest for inspiration. Light a candle, bake something delicious, music in the background and ESPECIALLY fluffy socks and a gigantic blanket.
